Tell Your Senators to Vote NO on Manchin-Toomey Amendment, YES on Grassley Proposal

Later today the U.S. Senate is expected to begin debate on gun-control legislation including The Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act, S. Amdt. 715, proposed by Sens. Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Toomey (R-Pa.) that will infringe upon your Second Amendment Rights. Your senators need to hear from you now!

The Manchin-Toomey Amendment, which is co-sponsored by anti-gun Sens. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirk (R-lll.), would effectively shut down all storefront National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks on weekends by requiring that gun show checks must be COMPLETED before any store check can be completed.

Prioritizing gun show checks over storefront checks will harm firearms retailers businesses. Weekends, when gun shows take place, are the busiest time for storefront retailers who will not be able to run background checks for their customers. The Second Amendment rights of customers at gun shops are just as important as those of gun show attendees. Congress should provide adequate resources to NICS so that ALL background checks are done instantly.

The Manchin-Toomey measure, S. Amdt. 715, also does not address critical product liability concerns for retailers processing private party transfers and imposes record-keeping responsibilities that could result in license revocation for even simple mistakes. Tell your senators not to put retailers livelihoods on the line.

Instead, urge senators to vote YES on Sen. Grassleys (R-Iowa) proposal which is supported by NSSF. This positive measure would help Fix NICS and improve current law, without expanding background checks that punish retailers and infringe on the Second Amendment. Your senators need to hear from you in support of the real solutions in the Grassley measure.

Find and call your U.S. senators here  , or dial 202-224-3121, and tell them to VOTE NO on the flawed Manchin-Toomey Amendment and YES on the solution-based Grassley alternative.

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb Supports S.649

Alan Gottlieb, the chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms and a power player within the conservative ACU, emailed dozens of gun rights activists on Sunday with an explanation of S.549, the Public Safety And Second Amendment Rights Protection Act.

“If you read the bill you can see all the advances for our cause that it contains like interstate sales of handguns, veteran gun rights restoration, travel with firearms protection, civil and criminal immunity lawsuit protection if you sell a gun plus more,” he wrote in the email. (The email, with the “to” field redacted, is posted below.)

Im a member of CCRKBA and a regular donor to the Second Amendment Foundation, both headed by Alan Gottlieb.  Gottlieb works tirelessly to promote and defend Second Amendment rights, including winning the McDonald case in the Supreme Court. I have the utmost respect for Alan Gottlieb.

I have not make a final decision to support or oppose the substitute bill , which Im continuing to study.  Most gun rights organizations including the NRA and GOA (I belong to both) are opposing the legislation.  The Senate is expected to vote on S.649 tomorrow (Tuesday April 16).

Redstate wrote today that,  Gottleib claimed that if a gun owner has a concealed weapons permit they will not be required to submit to a background check every time they purchase an additional firearm, instead they would merely fill out a form that will be held by the dealer as a record of sale. Now, either he’s confused, or lying, especially where background checks are concerned.

Im not aware of any Second Amendment Rights advocate who has more integrity than Alan Gottleib.  He is responsible for filing and winning dozens of Second Amendment rights cases in both state and federal courts, including some of the most significant victories in the Supreme Court.

Heres a copy of Alans email that was sent yesterday:

Subject: FYI

Just so you all know. I am in support on the Manchin-Tooney substitute bill to knock out the bad Schumer Background Check bill. I and our CCRKBA attorney lobbyist had a hand in influencing and writing parts of it.

The bill bans any federal gun registry and carries a 15 year prison term for anyone who violates it. We protect and expand a good number of pro-gun rights measures as well.

We also have an agreement that an additional amendment supported by Manchin and Toonry will be offered to even make it better by making it possible to get federal firearms rights restored negating the current Schumer legislation that blocks it.

If you read the bill you can see all the advances for our cause that it contains like interstate sales of handguns, veteran gun rights restoration, travel with firearms protection, civil and criminal immunity lawsuit protection if you sell a gun plus more. It also exempts the sale or transfer of firearms between family members and friends as well as sales outside a commercial venue from a background check. If you have any kind of current state permit to own, use or carry no check is done just the Form 4473 to stay with a dealer..

These advances for gun rights can not be made unless we win the Senate vote on Tuesday to substitute it for the current Schumer draconian background check that is in the bill at this time.

The gun grabbers have stepped into our trap.

It will be fun to see Obama forced to sign it!

Progressives Use Gun Control to Force Citizen Dependency on Government

The primary reason Progressives are trying to disarm the population is to increase the dependency of the average American on the government.

National (concealed carry) Reciprocity won bipartisan approval in the the House last year, passing by a margin of 272 to 154. National Reciprocity is expected to be added as an Amendment to the current gun control legislation pending in the Senate.

“Congress should recognize that the right to self-defense does not end at state lines,” said the NRA, in a statement issued last month when the measure was introduced in the Senate.

Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) described the measure this week as “the most pernicious” proposal under consideration and said approving the plan would mean that “Somebody could come from Wyoming to the big cities of New York or New Haven or Bridgeport and carry a concealed weapon, which is so against our way of life and the needs here in New York.”

Of course its against Chucks way of life.  He doesnt need a firearm since he has armed government security, provided at tax payer expense.

As a law enforcement officer I carried a concealed handgun for hundreds of days in Washington D.C.,  New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hartford and Newark.  Under provisions of the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA), close to two million active and retired law enforcement officers are authorized to carry concealed handguns in all U.S. states and territories, including the District of Columbia. Thousands of law abiding citizens are quietly carrying concealed in these cities every day under LEOSA and state concealed carry laws, without untoward incidents happening.

Concealed carry permit holders not only commit fewer gun related crimes than law enforcement officers, many train and practice more than the average police officer.  Contrary to popular belief, firearms training is a relatively small block of police academy training.  Most law enforcement officers spend less than an hour firing 50 rounds of ammunition at annual qualification with their handguns.

As a federal agent we qualified quarterly and qualified with at least 200 rounds a year. But since retiring, I shoot at least twice a month and firing thousands of rounds a year.  Many concealed carry permit holders train and practice more than an average police officer.

Concealed carry permit holders are the most law abiding and responsible citizens in America.  We are all safer because of the responsible, law abiding citizens who chose to train and practice at their own expense.  Firearms are used to prevent crime and save lives hundreds of thousands of times a year in America.

The ongoing debate over gun control is just another attempt by Progressives to make the average American dependent on the government in order to increase the Democrat Partys power.

By disarming law-abiding Americans, Progressives hope to instill fear into people.  Progressives want citizens totally dependent on the government.  People who cant protect themselves will be less likely to oppose increases in taxes or the size of government when they are totally dependent on the government to keep them safe.

People who depend on the government will also tend to be less likely to criticize the government because they know that government can choose to ignore its obligations to them.

If liberals were motivated by a desire to prevent gun violence, they would be in favor of laws which make it easier to convict criminals who use guns and demand that the government enforce the hundreds of current gun control laws.

Progressives work constantly to change America from a country where the government draws all authority from the people to a country where the people are dependent on the government and hence where people are controlled by the government.

If we are to stop the assault on Second Amendment civil rights, we must work tirelessly to make the average low-information voter aware of the Progressive self-interest at the core of their calls for gun control.

NOW IS THE TIME to Hijack #NowIsTheTime Hashtag

The White House is using left wing Social Media service Thunderclap to schedule tweets in their massive Twitter/Facebook gun grab campaign. Over 10,000 Progressives have already signed up to participate in the propaganda blitz.

The campaign is designed to trigger automated messages on the pages of people who sign up at a designated time. They are going to “Twitter-bomb” and create a strong presence on Facebook 24/7/365 using the hashtag #NowIsTheTime.

We the people are hijacking the hastag #NowIsTheTime in this fight for our civil rights. So far this is working well. If you search #nowisthetime on twitter, you will find most of the posts support the right side in the freedom fight.

We must keep it going.  Use the hashtag #NowIsTheTime in all of your Tweets.

You can also click on Self Defense Story Archive and Tweet as many stories as you want using the Tweet button at the top of each story, which will automatically include #nowisthetime hashtag. Do this EVERY DAY while gun control legislation is being debated in Congress.

The White House is using this Progressive Party tactic to make it appear the gun banners have more support than they actually have.  They control education and the both the entertainment and news media.  We can prevent them from taking over social media.

Use #NowIsTheTime on all of your tweets. If you don’t have a Twitter account, create one now. You can do so anonymously. You only have to create a user name and can use an anonymous email account.

National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Must be a Priority in Congress

The top legislative priority for gun owners in the previous Congress was passage of a national concealed carry reciprocity bill. The measure sailed through the House on a bipartisan 272 to 154 vote only to die at the hands of Senate Majority Leader Dirty Harry Reid, who refused to bring it to the floor.

Rep. Marlin Stutzman, Indiana Republican, earlier this year proposed a law to give anyone who can legally carry a concealed weapon in his home state the right to do so in another. Citizens of Arizona, Vermont, Wyoming and Alaska, where permits are not required, wouldn’t have to obtain one to take advantage of the reciprocity.

Illinois was the last state in that refused to recognize the right to bear arms, but an appeals court in December declared the Illinois policy unconstitutional. The Illinois legislature has until this summer to adopt a concealed-carry law. That leaves the District of Columbia the only jurisdiction in the country that won’t allow law abiding Americans to leave home with a legal firearm. Criminals illegally arm themselves everyday and cities like Chicago and Washington D.C. have the highest murder and violent crime rates in America.

The right to bear arms is crucial as a deterrent to crime. Over the past 20 years, the number of “shall issue” states has gone up by 21, while violent crime has steadily declined to the lowest levels in history. Criminals target places where they know no one else is armed, including the gun-free zones of Aurora, Colo., Newtown, Conn., and the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisc.

The Senate should not consider any gun control legislation that does not include national reciprocity for legally armed concealed carriers in every U.S. state and territory, as the LEOSA does for current and retired law enforcement officers.
